Curb & Gutter

Curb and gutter is one of the most requested services that Black Rock Construction performs. The majority of the curb and gutter our company places is done so through both hand poured and slipforming. Slipforming is a process in which concrete is placed in a slipform paver (also known as a curb machine) and then placed on the base surface. As the concrete is placed on the conveyor belt of the machine it is conveyed into the hopper of the machine. Inside the hopper the concrete is vibrated by high power vibrators (up to 12,000 vibrations per minute), then the concrete passes into the mold and is slipped out into the shape of the desired curb. Two major advantages of slipforming are the rapid rate at which curb can be placed and the fact that the concrete is vibrated, which produces higher strength curb and gutter. There are many different types of curb and gutter that our company can place. The different types range from 30" curb and gutter to 12" standup curb. It is often recommended by our company to place curb on a stone base. A stone base is not always necessary though, as many contractors and owners choose to place curb on a soil base.

Sidewalks

All sidewalk placed by Black Rock Construction meet or exceeds the guidelines and recommendations of ACI (American Concrete Institute). There are many different finishes. Sidewalk types our company is familiar with and experienced with placing include broom finish, salt finish and retardant finish. It is usually recommended that walks be placed on a 4" sand base. Although a sand base is recommended, if a good soil base is present it may be used. In most cases our company will provide preparation of the subgrade. In situations that allow it, we can slipform sidewalk in widths up to 4'. We can build new molds for various sizes In the situations were the walk is machineable, it can be placed at a very fast pace, up to 2000 linear feet per day.
